The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) assembled a small delegation for a May 21 visit to Capitol Hill to talk with New York members of the U.S. House of Representatives on issues important to engineering. Goldman Copeland Principal Dan Colombini participated in the delegation, which included Nancy Clark, incoming Chair of ACEC New York; John Evers, President of ACEC New York, and Mike Burridge, NYS Director of Government Relations.
The delegation had separate meetings with Representatives George Latimer (D-Westchester County), Mike Lawler (R-Rockland and Westchester Counties), Joe Morelle (D-Rochester area), and Elise Stefanik (R-North Country). They also met with staff members of Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) and Paul Tonka (D-Albany area).
Among the issues discussed were business tax matters addressed in the budget reconciliation bill that was passed by the House the following day and is now under consideration by the Senate. Key priorities in that context include retention of the Pass-Through Business Deduction Under Section 199A, suspension of R&D Tax Amortization, and retention of clean energy tax credits.
Other legislative priorities raised include workforce issues such as expansion of the H-1B visa program, the need for more engineers in the U.S., and the importance of infrastructure funding.
The visit sparked productive conversations with the House members and their staffs. Those discussions will continue and expand, as congressional consideration of these issues evolves.
