Goldman
Copeland Associates (GCA) is a full service MEP consulting engineering firm. We
have been providing engineering and design services to private sector clients
and government agencies from our New York City office since 1968. Our services
range from feasibility studies and condition surveys to detail design, technical
assistance during construction, start-up assistance, and commissioning. Our highly qualified staff of
engineering and support personnel enables us to serve our clients efficiently
and professionally with hands on principal involvement for each project.
GCA
is a member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC). We are experienced in sustainable design
elements as developed by the USGBC for LEED certification. We bring to all our assignments
consciousness of energy efficiency and knowledge of the latest building
construction technologies appropriate to each project.
Charles
Copeland took part recently in two panel discussions at URBAN
GREEN Expo:
The
Good, the Bad and the Transformative;
retrofitting strategies for existing commercial buildings. Charlie reviewed the ongoing testing GCA
is performing in a Class A high rise commercial office building in Midtown,
measuring actual cooling and heating savings from reducing excess outside air
through both demand control ventilation and replacing aging outside air dampers.
These two relatively inexpensive retrofits could save significant energy cost
and minimize the discharge of millions of tons of CO2.
The
Multi Facets of Multifamily;
exploring green principles in low income housing. Charlie reviewed what has and has not
worked in the past, with an emphasis on cost-effective opportunities going
forward. Goldman Copeland Associates (GCA) is engineering two projects for
Common Ground; the Lee Residence in lower Manhattan on Houston Street and
Hegeman Residence in Brooklyn.
Common Ground provides sustainable housing support for those most in
need.
The
GCA energy group has recently completed or is currently working on a broad range
of other energy sustainability studies for clients such as NYU Medical Center,
Vornado, Hackensack University Medical Center, Stahl Realty, and Honeywell
Energy Systems. GCA has also
provided thermal designs for several of the earliest NYC office building CHP
(combined heat and power) projects, including 717 Fifth Ave (reciprocating
engines), 1350 Avenue of the Americas, 666 Fifth Avenue and Marriott Financial
Center (micro-turbines), as well as consulting services on other CHP plant
feasibility studies including One Penn Plaza, Hunts Point, 330 Madison, 1285
Avenue of the Americas, etc. CHP
can double the utilization of source energy compared to electric generation from
a central utility significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption.
The
firm also assisted Con Edison in developing a strategy and control algorithm to
reduce winter peak steam demand in their underground steam piping system by
utilizing stored thermal energy in existing building hot water
systems.
We
are also pleased to have provided pro bono services to help the Park Slope Food
Coop achieve US EPA Energy Star certification. It is the first grocery store in
Brooklyn to receive this award, ranking in the top 10% of all grocery stores in
the country for energy performance.
