A central cooling plant on a college campus has several quantifiable advantages over decentralized equipment. These include improved efficiency, ability to cycle easily between alternate energy sources, reduced maintenance burden for staff, and long-term capital cost reduction.

Often overlooked as a benefit, however, is the improvement to campus aesthetics. This article explores a range of benefits realized by Vassar College after building a central cooling plant to replace distributed cooling equipment.
